How to Brew the Perfect Cup of Coffee: Tips from Fika Coffee Roasting

Step 1: Start with Freshly Roasted Coffee Beans

The foundation of a great cup of coffee is high-quality, freshly roasted beans. Coffee loses its flavor over time, so it’s best to use beans that have been roasted within the last 2-3 weeks. Step 2: Grind Your Beans Just Before Brewing

Grinding your coffee just before brewing is essential for preserving its flavors and aromas. Invest in a burr grinder for consistent results, and adjust the grind size depending on your brewing method:

  • Coarse Grind: Ideal for French press or cold brew.

  • Medium Grind: Perfect for drip coffee makers.

  • Fine Grind: Best for espresso or AeroPress.


Step 3: Use the Right Coffee-to-Water Ratio

The coffee-to-water ratio is key to achieving a balanced brew. A good starting point is a 1:16 ratio, which means 1 gram of coffee for every 16 grams (or milliliters) of water. For example:

  • 1 cup of coffee: Use 15 grams of coffee and 240 milliliters of water.

Adjust the ratio to suit your taste preferences, whether you like your coffee stronger or milder.


Step 4: Pay Attention to Water Quality and Temperature

Water makes up about 98% of your coffee, so its quality matters. Use filtered water for the best taste. As for temperature, aim for 195-205°F (90-96°C). If you don’t have a thermometer, let your water sit for about 30 seconds after boiling to reach the ideal range.


Step 5: Choose Your Brewing Method

Each brewing method brings out different characteristics of the coffee. Here are a few popular methods and tips for each:

  • French Press:

    • Add coarse-ground coffee and hot water, then let it steep for 4 minutes before pressing.

    • This method produces a full-bodied cup with rich flavors.

  • Pour-Over (e.g., Chemex or Hario V60):

    • Use a medium grind and pour hot water in a slow, circular motion over the coffee grounds.

    • This method highlights bright, clean flavors.

  • AeroPress:

    • Combine fine-ground coffee with hot water, stir, and press.

    • Perfect for a quick, smooth cup with minimal bitterness.

  • Drip Coffee Maker:

    • Use medium-ground coffee and ensure your machine is clean for optimal results.

    • A convenient option for consistent brewing.


Step 6: Experiment and Enjoy

Coffee brewing is both an art and a science. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different beans, grind sizes, and brewing techniques to find your perfect cup. Take notes on what works best for you—whether it’s the floral notes of an Ethiopian roast or the chocolatey richness of a Colombian blend.
